Michael David Scudder

Michael Scudder has explored inner and outer reality through creative art – drawing, photography, film, printmaking, assemblage, the written word, and standup comedy – his entire life.

Scudder was born and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. He became committed to using film and photography to create art when he was in his early teens after seeing the films of Stan Brakhage. His first serious camera was a Diana and by age fourteen he had built a darkroom in his parents’ house. Immediately after high school, he worked for a film production company where he deepened his technical knowledge of photography. Scudder studied filmmaking with Walter Ungerer at Goddard College, photography with Don Doll, SJ at Creighton University, and drawing at the Art Students League and Columbia University. He moved to New York City when he was in his early twenties and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in biological sciences from Columbia University. While at Columbia, he studied art history.

At different times during his thirty year career in information technology, Scudder has been a software engineer, enterprise architect, information security strategist, and proposal developer for the telecommunications and financial industries and the public sector. He currently conducts cost-performance analyses of the nation’s air traffic control system, a project which combines his love of mathematics with his passion for rendering complexity accessible through visualization.

In 2007, Scudder relocated from Brooklyn to Rhinebeck, New York, where he now resides. He is working on a series of assemblages, drawings, and other types of artworks. Scudder continues to take photographs and is making the transition from analog to digital photography, which includes digitizing his extensive archive of black-and-white and color negatives. He merchandises his face designs under the name Wimowe Designs, is an active member of WAAM.
